Have you tried restoring your computer to a earlier time before this error started occurring or run sfc /scannow from the command prompt (you might be prompted for your Windows XP CD. Also, have you tried refreshing the installation? Insert your XP CD and do an upgrade (please not, the XP CD must have the same Service Pack as the one in the system to complete this procedure.

Under Vista, no, at least not safely or without issue. Explorer.exe just invokes views created by shell32.dll and its supporting files, and shell32.dll and the configuration data they depend upon is by necessity very "hooked in" to the OS on which it was designed to run.
Explorer.exe is not "a stand-alone application" you could expect to just lift and run on some other Win32 operating system. You could find a third-party file manager that does have such intentions, and have expectation of being able to install that on Vista.

There are still a lot of Upgrade Issues affecting Windows Vista (especially affecting Windows Vista Build 5308 CTP). Read all of my Posts about all of my Upgrade Issues with the Windows Update Service (affecting Build 5308 CTP) just as one example, of some of the Upgrade Issues you could encounter in Windows Vista. Your best bet is to Install Windows Vista as a Clean Install (at least until Beta 2 comes out on Winds Day, May 24th, 2006).

It's not confirmed whether it's the 24th or not Kevin. Also, what's Winds Day? Don't you mean Wednesday?

Well... I live in Nottinghamshire, Robin Hood county in England and Kensington, London. Here, we call it "Wednesday" as do most places for some... strange reason.
